In a national poll conducted by Public Opinion Strategies in late September on attitudes about the trucking industry, 80% of survey recipients said they believe truck drivers are safer than passenger vehicle drivers. Additionally, 90% of respondents said passenger vehicle drivers are more likely to speed than truck drivers, and 74% think that when an accident involves a car and a truck the passenger vehicle driver is at fault.
There’s no doubt that efforts to train truck drivers to operate more safely are paying off. At the same time, with a large percentage of safety-related events attributed to some degree of driver distraction, fleets continue to adopt collision mitigation systems that help focus driver attention on the road.
